9th May 1812: Soldier & companion are drowned in the Rochdale Canal

At 11.00 p.m. on Saturday night the 9th of May 1812, John Moore a Sergeant in the 1st Regiment of Manchester Local Militia Sergeant and a female companion, his cousin, got into an altercation with a group of men at a bridge over the Rochdale Canal in Manchester. They were pushed off the bridge and into the canal, and subsequently drowned, their bodies being found the following morning.

It was later alleged that Moore had refused to be twisted-in, and had feared for his life for the last 3 weeks prior to his assassination.

As reported in the Leeds Mercury of 16/05/1812 and Lancaster Gazette of the same date and 23/05/1812, and a letter from William Hay to the Home Office of 16th May 1812, which can be found at HO 40/1/1.
